1 Need

In the path of modernization and digital transformation, ENAC National Civil Aviation Authority has recognized the importance of making its digital solutions truly accessible to all people. In particular, the introduction of the Google Workspace suite highlighted the need to effectively support blind employees, promoting an autonomous and inclusive use of work tools.

To address this challenge, ENAC turned to Dinova with several priority objectives:

  • Favorire l’adozione di Google Workspace tra i dipendenti, in particolare quelli non vedenti.
  • Migliorare l’accessibilità e l’usabilità di strumenti della suite Google Workspace tramite tecnologie assistive.
  • Rendere più autonomi i colleghi non vedenti nell’utilizzo degli strumenti digitali.

The collaboration with Dinova led to the development of a concrete, scalable, and people-centered solution. A project that succeeded in combining technology and social impact, generating measurable benefits in a short time:
An accessible and intelligent chatbot that guides blind users in the use of Gmail (and soon the entire Workspace suite).

3 The challenge

The introduction of Google Workspace represented a decisive step in ENAC’s digital transformation. However, an important issue emerged: blind employees were encountering difficulties in the daily use of Gmail and other tools, despite the support of assistive technologies. ENAC therefore sought a partner capable of designing a truly inclusive solution, going beyond standard configurations to build a smooth, accessible, and intelligent user experience.

4 Solution by Dinova

Dinova supported ENAC in the creation of a conversational virtual assistant, based on Google Cloud technologies, to assist blind users in the use of Gmail. The project was carried out with the direct involvement of blind personnel, present in every phase of the work: from design to solution validation.

The solution includes:

  • The design of a semantic knowledge base, integrating the official Gmail and Workspace documentation with content on accessibility and the use of the JAWS screen reader.
  • The implementation of the chatbot with Dialogflow CX and Agent Builder, to ensure smooth natural-language interactions.
  • The hosting on Cloud Run, to offer a lightweight, accessible, and scalable interface.
